Milk Paint: Keeping the Tradition Alive

Our Milk Paint story began in 1989 with Homestead House Paint Co., a Canadian family-owned paint manufacturer founded through a passion for historic restoration and traditional paint-making.

As Canada’s first Milk Paint manufacturer, we began making this centuries-old paint the traditional way—from the raw ingredients—and we still do today.

Made with just five simple ingredients—limestone, chalk, clay, casein and natural or mineral pigments—Milk Paint comes as a powder that is mixed with water when you are ready to paint. This traditional format gives it an exceptionally long shelf life and allows you to adjust the consistency for nearly any look or technique.

One Paint. Virtually Any Look.

Milk Paint is one of the most versatile paints available. Use it to create:

  • A smooth, solid painted finish
  • A naturally chippy, time-worn look
  • A rustic or heavily distressed finish
  • A translucent wood stain or colour wash
  • A soft, textured limewash on walls
  • Layered finishes with authentic depth and character

Milk Paint can make brand-new wood look as though it has been naturally aged for hundreds of years. Unlike modern paints that imitate an antique finish, Milk Paint creates genuine variation, texture and movement as it interacts with the surface beneath it.

It bonds naturally to raw and porous surfaces, including unfinished wood, plaster and masonry. For slick or previously finished surfaces, our Bonding Agent can be added directly to the mixed paint for greater adhesion.

No two Milk Paint projects will ever look exactly the same—and that is the beauty of it. From refined and modern to rustic, aged and authentically vintage, Milk Paint gives you the creative freedom to make the finish entirely your own.

Add water, choose your look and Paint it Beautiful™.
